Tie against Sofapaka always presents some good and memorable moments and here are our picks ahead of tomorrow’s league fixture at Thika stadium.
March 2013 – the year Gor Mahia finally won the league, they opened the season against a strong Sofapaka side tipped for the title with a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal by new signing Paul Kiongera.
October 2013 – Dan Sserunkuma’s winner effectively knocked Sofapaka out of the title race prompting wild celebrations as we finally got to lay a hand on the league title for the first time in 18 years, a fact confirmed with a win against Kakamega Homeboys in the next game (2013).
October 2014 – Abdoul Fiston Razak’s brace against us in Machakos led to ugly scenes in and around the stadium as the 2-3 loss took the title race with Sofapaka to the wire at the close of the season. A 3-0 thumping of Ushuru a couple of weeks later would however see us successfully defend the title
August 2018 – Engagements in the CAF CC group stages, and CECAFA tournament led to a fixture pile-up and rivals were praying for fatigue to get the better of us.
Coach Dylan Kerr used a second-string team captained by Innocent Wafula that would be famously known as Wakulima and they showed no mercy to opponents, including thrashing Sofapaka 3-0 in Narok with goals by Joachim Oluoch, Innocent Wafula and Sammy Onyango.
