It’s a dream for many young players to get a starting role in the first team and that’s exactly what happened to defender Frank Odhiambo who started for Gor Mahia against City Stars yesterday.

The tall centre-back helped the team pull a 1-0 win and he can pin the clean sheet as a perfect start to his time at the club.

Odhiambo, who joined the club from Bongonaya FC last year, says that he felt good to get a starting role and that all he has ever wanted was to play a competitive match in the green shirt.

“It was ecstatic… the joy that comes with that is all any footballer would wish for. I just wanted to play and having played the full match with a clean sheet to it was great – so it was a good one for me,” he notes.

The 19-year-old youngster who was part of the Kenya Under-20 team also known as Rising Stars that played a number of matches last year says he felt no pressure being handed a starting role in a tight game.

“I didn’t feel any sort of pressure… I had been waiting for such a moment and when you are partnering a player like Harun Shakava who is loaded with experience, you know you will be well guided.”

Assistant Coach Sammy ‘Pamzo’ Omollo applauds him and says the young defender has arrived in style and he made the backline looked stable against City Stars.

“The boy has arrived in style… I told him not to look back. He made the defense look stable (against City Stars) resulting in a clean sheet. He is in the right team that will propel him to great heights. He simply has a bright future ahead of him.”

Having played in a lower league, the lads rates the top league as more serious and hopes for more: “The system of play is different…. different energy and no room for mistakes in top league. Playing at the top tier had always been a moment I looked forward to and hoping to go on to play in CAF matches.”

The defender promises more if given chance: “I can promise you to expect more… if given more chance, more clean sheets top the list of targets and helping Mahia to achieve more. Getting to represent the U-23 and national team when the opportunity arises will also be among my aims.”
